*Variations in the User Prompts from chart to chart are just the result of random number generation in Python. I wrote a few arrays of various styles and methods to ask questions to change up the results. Every time this site writes an explanation or generates an image, the script picks from each at random.

I sequence the requests into multiple prompts because I find GPT 3.5 to perform much better with short, well-managed contexts. Thus, I track the context directly in Python and only ask ChatGPT targeted questions.

In our endeavor to unravel the mysteries of the seemingly unrelated worlds of beauty pageants and baseball, we set out to investigate the perplexing relationship between the age of the reigning Miss World and the triumphs of the Milwaukee Brewers. While the subject matter might seem as mismatched as a baseball glove at a beauty pageant, our findings suggest that there might be more to this connection than meets the eye.

Through an exhaustive analysis of data from Wikipedia and Baseball-Reference.com spanning the years 1975 to 2022, we uncovered a correlation coefficient of 0.5727747 and a statistically significant p-value of less than 0.01. This indicates a notable association between the age of the Miss World and the wins achieved by the Milwaukee Brewers. To put it in layman’s terms, there appears to be a "beauty and the Brewers" effect at play here.

“So, it seems the key to the Brewers' success may very well be the reigning Miss World's age. Who would've thought?” As the old saying goes, "Age is just a number, but in this case, it might be a winning number for the Brew Crew." Our groundbreaking findings pave the way for further research into the intriguing juxtaposition of beauty, baseball, and statistical anomalies.

In their seminal work, "Age and Achievement: Miss World's Influence on Professional Sporting Events," Smith, Doe, and Jones meticulously investigated the intriguing link between the age of the reigning Miss World and the performance of professional sports teams. Their comprehensive analysis revealed a statistically significant correlation, setting the stage for our own exploration into the unlikely association of beauty pageants and baseball triumphs.

Now, you may be thinking, "How do Miss World and the Milwaukee Brewers share any semblance of connection?" Well, let's just say they're more closely tied than a runner caught in a pickle. As we dig deeper into this peculiar alliance, it becomes clear that there's a certain je ne sais quoi about the age of the crowned beauty queen that seems to work its magic on the Brewers' game. It's quite the curveball, isn't it?

Turning to a more literary perspective, "Age and Artistry: A Cultural Analysis of Miss World and Baseball Triumphs" by Goldstein and Patel explores the cultural significance of age in the realms of beauty and sports. Their examination of age-related symbolism and its impact on athletic prowess provides valuable insight into the broader implications of our findings. It seems age truly is more than just a number, especially when it comes to the Brewers' wins and the reigning Miss World.

In a delightful departure from the realm of non-fiction, we also draw inspiration from the works of fiction that resonate with the themes of victory and allure. From "The Beauty Queen Strikes Back" by Emma K. Grant to "The Art of the Perfect Pitch" by Benjamin R. Hopper, these captivating narratives parallel the unexpected synergy between beauty and baseball. It's as if Cinderella herself decided to trade her glass slipper for a pair of cleats and step up to the plate.

And speaking of tales both enchanting and sporting, let's not overlook the cinematic gems that have graced the silver screen with their whimsical narratives. Movies such as "Miss Congeniality" and "*42" offer delightful vignettes of beauty pageants and baseball, each adding a layer of intrigue to our exploration. As we weave through these cultural touchstones, we come to appreciate the timeless allure of intertwining beauty and sport in ways that tickle the funny bone and tug at the heartstrings.

As we navigate this intriguing terrain of statistical anomalies and the unlikely convergence of disparate worlds, our scholarly pursuits are infused with a touch of whimsy, a dash of charm, and perhaps a sprinkling of fairy dust. So, let's keep our eyes on the ball and our spirits high, for the nexus of beauty, baseball, and bewitching anomalies awaits our scholarly scrutiny with open arms.

To unlock the enigmatic alliance between pageantry and pitchers, our research team embarked on a quest as daring as a base runner stealing home in the bottom of the ninth. We scoured the depths of the internet - and by depths, we mostly mean sifting through the robust archives of Wikipedia and the venerable troves of Baseball-Reference.com. As they say, when in doubt, consult the wisdom of the crowd and the batting averages of the pros, right?

Now, to plunge into the nitty-gritty of our methodology, imagine a concoction as complex as a knuckle-curve-slider. First, we amassed meticulously curated data spanning the years 1975 to 2022, encompassing the Miss World pageants and the Milwaukee Brewers' valiant exploits on the field. Then, armed with an Excel spreadsheet mightier than a Louisville Slugger, we meticulously recorded the age of each crowned Miss World and the corresponding wins tallied by the Brewers in the same calendar year.

As our assortment of data grew more bountiful than a spread of ballpark hotdogs, we took to our trusty statistical software like a pitcher taking to the mound. After conducting rigorous analyses, we unveiled the correlation coefficient of 0.5727747, signaling a noteworthy relationship between the age of the reigning Miss World and the wins secured by the Brewers. It seemed the numbers aligned as harmoniously as a synchronized double play, or perhaps as mysteriously as an outfielder making a leaping catch against all odds.

And here's a thought to keep you on your toes: What do you call a Miss World contestant who's also a baseball fan? A curveball-cutie! Oh, the joys of serendipitous connections between two seemingly unrelated worlds.

Furthermore, to corroborate our findings, we bravely delved into the realm of regression analysis. Like a seasoned umpire calling balls and strikes, we rigorously examined the statistical significance, and lo and behold, we unveiled a p-value of less than 0.01. It was a revelation as startling as a perfectly executed hidden ball trick – indicating that the correlation we observed was not a mere fluke, but a substantial and tangible phenomenon.

As we tread the path to unraveling these extraordinary intertwinings, we mustn't forget the sage advice of the legendary baseball broadcaster Vin Scully – "Statistics are used much like a drunk uses a lamppost: for support, not illumination." Though our findings shed light on this arcane correlation, they also beckon further inquiries into the stunning braid of beauty and baseball, leading to a delightful dance of discovery that defies expectations and perhaps even logic.

Correlation r = 0.5727747 (Pearson correlation coefficient)
Correlation is a measure of how much the variables move together. If it is 0.99, when one goes up the other goes up. If it is 0.02, the connection is very weak or non-existent. If it is -0.99, then when one goes up the other goes down. If it is 1.00, you probably messed up your correlation function.

r2 = 0.3280709 (Coefficient of determination)
This means 32.8% of the change in the one variable (i.e., Wins for the Milwaukee Brewers) is predictable based on the change in the other (i.e., Miss World's Age) over the 48 years from 1975 through 2022.

p < 0.01, which is statistically significant(Null hypothesis significance test)
The p-value is 2.1E-5. 0.0000209758114897176720000000
The p-value is a measure of how probable it is that we would randomly find a result this extreme. More specifically the p-value is a measure of how probable it is that we would randomly find a result this extreme if we had only tested one pair of variables one time.

But I am a p-villain. I absolutely did not test only one pair of variables one time. I correlated hundreds of millions of pairs of variables. I threw boatloads of data into an industrial-sized blender to find this correlation.

Who is going to stop me? p-value reporting doesn't require me to report how many calculations I had to go through in order to find a low p-value!
On average, you will find a correaltion as strong as 0.57 in 0.0021% of random cases. Said differently, if you correlated 47,674 random variables You don't actually need 47 thousand variables to find a correlation like this one. You can also correlate variables that are not independent. I do this a lot.

p-value calculations are useful for understanding the probability of a result happening by chance. They are most useful when used to highlight the risk of a fluke outcome. For example, if you calculate a p-value of 0.30, the risk that the result is a fluke is high. It is good to know that! But there are lots of ways to get a p-value of less than 0.01, as evidenced by this project.

Just to be clear: I'm being completely transparent about the calculations. There is no math trickery. This is just how statistics shakes out when you calculate hundreds of millions of random correlations.
with the same 47 degrees of freedom, Degrees of freedom is a measure of how many free components we are testing. In this case it is 47 because we have two variables measured over a period of 48 years. It's just the number of years minus ( the number of variables minus one ), which in this case simplifies to the number of years minus one.
you would randomly expect to find a correlation as strong as this one.

[ 0.34, 0.74 ] 95% correlation confidence interval (using the Fisher z-transformation)
The confidence interval is an estimate the range of the value of the correlation coefficient, using the correlation itself as an input. The values are meant to be the low and high end of the correlation coefficient with 95% confidence.

This one is a bit more complciated than the other calculations, but I include it because many people have been pushing for confidence intervals instead of p-value calculations (for example: NEJM. However, if you are dredging data, you can reliably find yourself in the 5%. That's my goal!

All values for the years included above: If I were being very sneaky, I could trim years from the beginning or end of the datasets to increase the correlation on some pairs of variables. I don't do that because there are already plenty of correlations in my database without monkeying with the years.

Still, sometimes one of the variables has more years of data available than the other. This page only shows the overlapping years. To see all the years, click on "See what else correlates with..." link above.

Why this works

  1. Data dredging: I have 25,153 variables in my database. I compare all these variables against each other to find ones that randomly match up. That's 632,673,409 correlation calculations! This is called “data dredging.” Instead of starting with a hypothesis and testing it, I instead abused the data to see what correlations shake out. It’s a dangerous way to go about analysis, because any sufficiently large dataset will yield strong correlations completely at random.
  2. Lack of causal connection: There is probably Because these pages are automatically generated, it's possible that the two variables you are viewing are in fact causually related. I take steps to prevent the obvious ones from showing on the site (I don't let data about the weather in one city correlate with the weather in a neighboring city, for example), but sometimes they still pop up. If they are related, cool! You found a loophole.
no direct connection between these variables, despite what the AI says above. This is exacerbated by the fact that I used "Years" as the base variable. Lots of things happen in a year that are not related to each other! Most studies would use something like "one person" in stead of "one year" to be the "thing" studied.
  3. Observations not independent: For many variables, sequential years are not independent of each other. If a population of people is continuously doing something every day, there is no reason to think they would suddenly change how they are doing that thing on January 1. A simple Personally I don't find any p-value calculation to be 'simple,' but you know what I mean.
p-value calculation does not take this into account, so mathematically it appears less probable than it really is.
  4. Confounding variable: 2020 is particularly different from the other years on this graph. Confounding variables (like global pandemics) will cause two variables to look connected when in fact a "sneaky third" variable is influencing both of them behind the scenes.
  5. Y-axis doesn't start at zero: I truncated the Y-axes of the graph above. I also used a line graph, which makes the visual connection stand out more than it deserves. Nothing against line graphs. They are great at telling a story when you have linear data! But visually it is deceptive because the only data is at the points on the graph, not the lines on the graph. In between each point, the data could have been doing anything. Like going for a random walk by itself!
Mathematically what I showed is true, but it is intentionally misleading. Below is the same chart but with both Y-axes starting at zero.
