The pursuit of scientific inquiry often leads researchers down unexpected paths, and occasionally, those paths intersect with the most unlikely of subjects. In this study, we turn our gaze toward the heavens to explore the connection between the distance separating Uranus and Earth and the number of slot machines in Nevada. As the saying goes, "When in doubt, look to the stars – and the slot machines, of course."
We embarked on this celestial gambling journey due to the peculiar observation that when Uranus is at its greatest distance from Earth, there is a statistically significant increase in the number of slot machines in Nevada. It seems our cosmic kin are trying to tell us something, or perhaps they're just placing their bets on the next celestial body to influence human behavior. Who knew Uranus had such a cosmic sense of humor?
Delving into the realms of astrophysics and statistical analysis, we aimed to uncover the mechanisms at play behind this otherworldly connection. Our findings not only revealed a strong correlation between the celestial distance and terrestrial slot machines but also highlighted the cosmic dance of probability and planetary positions. One might say that in this universe, cosmic rays are just nature's way of nudging us to take a spin of the wheel.

Previous research has delved into the intricate web of celestial phenomena and their potential impact on human activities. Smith et al. (2010) expound upon the astrological influence on human behavior through a series of controlled experiments, noting the correlation between lunar phases and social behaviors. However, their study merely scratches the surface of the cosmic impact on earthly affairs. One might even say that their findings only offer a partial eclipse of the overarching cosmic dance.
Doe and Jones (2015) investigate the connection between planetary positions and agricultural yield, shedding light on the gravitational forces' potential influence on crop growth patterns. Their work uncovers compelling evidence of a correlation between Venus's retrograde motion and the abundance of certain crops – a tantalizing tease of the cosmic forces at play in our daily lives. Perhaps this research introduces a new dimension to the phrase "growing like a weed.
In a similar vein, "Astrology Almanac: Navigating Your Path through the Cosmos" by Celeste Star provides a comprehensive guide to the celestial dance and its impact on terrestrial affairs. Star posits that cosmic events such as planetary alignments and retrograde motions exert a subtle but pervasive influence on human endeavors, from personal relationships to financial decisions. This perspective invites us to consider whether celestial bodies are playing a game of cosmic roulette with our destinies.
Bringing a fictional twist to the exploration of celestial forces, the novel "Slot Machines from Beyond" by Luna Lovegood introduces readers to a whimsical narrative where extraterrestrial visitors use slot machines as a means of earthly communication. Lovegood's tale weaves together the cosmic and the comical, suggesting that perhaps aliens are offering us more than just crop circles and close encounters.
In a more non-traditional avenue of research, the popular TV show "Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey," hosted by the charismatic Neil deGrasse Tyson, explores the wonders of the universe and the interconnectedness of cosmic phenomena. While not directly related to slot machines, the show has provided valuable insights into celestial mechanics and may offer a cosmic perspective on earthly gambling patterns. Who knows, maybe the slot machines in Vegas are the real cosmic jackpot!
Ah, the plot thickens like interstellar dust in the cosmic tale of Uranus, slot machines, and the ever-entertaining dance of galactic hilarity. With every spin of the reels and twist of the celestial orbits, one can't help but chuckle at the whims of the universe.

To unravel the enigmatic link between the distance from Uranus to Earth and the proliferation of slot machines in Nevada, our research team embarked on a cosmic journey that blended astronomy with gambling analytics. We used data from a myriad of sources, including Astropy's precise planetary positions and orbital mechanics calculations, as well as the extensive records of slot machines in the state of Nevada provided by the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). The celestial and terrestrial domains collided in a cosmic collision of data collection, making us feel like real-life astronomers of luck and statistics.
Our temporal scope spanned from the year 1984 to 2022, allowing us to capture the ebbs and flows of celestial distances and slot machine counts over nearly four decades. This rigorous time frame ensured that we didn't miss any astronomical or gambling upheavals, potentially caused by any celestial alignments or jackpot outbursts from the vicinity of Uranus. It's safe to say we didn't want to gamble with our choice of timeline!
To gain a comprehensive understanding of the celestial variable, we obtained specific angular distance measurements between Uranus and Earth at regular intervals using the robust functionalities of the Astropy package. This method allowed us to precisely track the dynamic fluctuations in the Uranian-Earthian gap, ensuring that no cosmic cranny was left unexplored. After diving into these celestial measurements, we achieved a holistic perspective on the cosmic dance of these distant celestial bodies, which, surprisingly, seemed to sashay alongside the rise and fall of slot machines in Nevada. It was almost as if the celestial bodies were lining up in cosmic slots, pulling our attention toward celestial slot machine correlations one astronomical unit at a time.
On the terrestrial front, the UNLV's slot machine data provided us with a treasure trove of statistical measures capturing the ebb and flow of slot machines in various establishments across Nevada. We painstakingly collected the counts of slot machines from diverse casinos, in a flurry of data analysis that made us feel like statistical high rollers. After all, what's a celestial gambling study without hitting the jackpot of statistical inference?
With our rich data in hand, we then set about executing a series of statistical analyses that evoked the fusion of cosmic constants and terrestrial gambling whims. We conducted correlation analyses to unveil the relationship between these seemingly unrelated variables, using a range of statistical models that made us feel like we were placing bets on the outcome of a cosmic game of chance. Our statistical methodology was catered to capture the nuanced interplay of cosmic distance and terrestrial temptation, proving that even in the realm of science, you can bet on the unexpected connections.
Suffice it to say, our methodology was anything but a roll of the dice. It aimed to capture the essence of celestial serendipity and terrestrial chance, leaving no boundary unexplored and no slot machine unaccounted. With this approach, we endeavored to shine a light on the celestial-slot machine connection and set the stage for a new era of interdisciplinary research, one that flirts with the cosmos and tries its luck with statistical stars.

To our delight and surprise, the analysis of the data unveiled a significant correlation between the distance separating Uranus and Earth and the number of slot machines in Nevada over the period from 1984 to 2022. The Pearson correlation coefficient, r, was calculated to be 0.9228719, signifying a remarkably strong positive relationship between the two variables. One might even say that Uranus had a "cosmic influence" on the world of gambling in Nevada.
This correlation was further supported by the coefficient of determination, r-squared, which stood at a substantial 0.8516926. It seems that just as celestial bodies exert their gravitational pull on one another, Uranus also exerts a gravitational pull on the proliferation of slot machines in the Silver State. Perhaps astronomers and statisticians alike should start looking out for more "gambling stars" in the sky.
The p-value obtained for this correlation was less than 0.01, indicating a high level of statistical significance. We can therefore confidently conclude that the relationship between the distance from Uranus and the number of slot machines in Nevada is not merely a celestial coincidence, but a statistically supported phenomenon. We may need to consider introducing "astro-gambling" into the realm of celestial predictions.
A visual representation of this correlation is presented in Fig. 1, which shows a scatterplot of the distance between Uranus and Earth against the number of slot machines in Nevada. The scatterplot further solidifies the robustness of the relationship, painting a vivid picture of how Uranus seems to be playing its own game of "cosmic slots" with the casinos of Nevada.
This discovery not only sheds light on the whimsical connections that can arise between celestial events and human activities but also beckons us to consider the broader implications of our cosmic context. As we continue to unravel the mysteries of the universe, let us not forget to appreciate the quirky ways in which the celestial and the terrestrial intersect. After all, who knows what other cosmic surprises await us, perhaps a jackpot hidden in the stars?

While not directly related to slot machines, the show has provided valuable insights into celestial mechanics and may offer a cosmic perspective on earthly gambling patterns. Who knows, maybe the slot machines in Vegas are the real cosmic jackpot!
Ah, the plot thickens like interstellar dust in the cosmic tale of Uranus, slot machines, and the ever-entertaining dance of galactic hilarity. With every spin of the reels and twist of the celestial orbits, one can't help but chuckle at the whims of the universe.
[[RESULTS]]

[[DISCUSSION]]
The celestial dance of the planets has long been a subject of fascination and speculation, often steeped in mythical narratives and astrological beliefs. However, our research has brought forth compelling evidence of a tangible connection between the distant realm of Uranus and the glitzy world of slot machines in Nevada. It appears that while Uranus may be distant in the sky, its influence on earthly endeavors, particularly the gambling infrastructure in Nevada, is anything but remote. One might even say that Uranus is truly making its presence felt in the realm of earthly indulgence, quite literally becoming the "star" of the show in Nevada.
Building upon the literature review, which often flirted with the cosmic and the comical, our findings not only lend support to the idea of celestial forces impacting human activities but also add a playful twist to our understanding of statistical correlations. The results substantiate previous notions of the cosmic influence on earthly affairs, providing a clear statistical backing to the whimsical hypotheses that celestial bodies might be pulling the strings behind our daily activities.
Our study reveals that just as the moon's phases have been linked to social behaviors and Venus's retrograde to agricultural yields, the distance between Uranus and Earth serves as an uncanny harbinger of the ebb and flow of slot machines in Nevada. It's almost as if the cosmos is teasing us with its own version of a vast, celestial slot machine, encouraging us to take a spin on its astronomical reels.
The exceptionally strong correlation coefficient of 0.9228719 reaffirms the robustness of this cosmic-slot machine connection, highlighting the spellbinding statistical dance that Uranus seems to be performing with the casinos of Nevada. It begs the question – are there "astronomical slot strategies" waiting to be unveiled, or should astrologers be consulted alongside statisticians when making gambling predictions? Perhaps "astro-gambling" is not as far-fetched as it may seem, and we are just scratching the surface of the celestial influences on earthly activities.
As we ponder the significance of this correlation, it becomes evident that the interplay between the celestial and the terrestrial holds more intrigue than meets the eye. It is a reminder that in the cosmic casino of the universe, there could be hidden jackpots waiting to be discovered, or perhaps, even more Uranus-sized surprises lurking in the stars. Indeed, as we continue our scientific pursuits, it seems fitting to keep our eyes on the skies and our bets open to the cosmic possibilities. After all, when it comes to the vast expanse of the universe, one might say that the odds are indeed astronomical!

[[INTRDUCTION]]
INTRODUCTION

Correlation is a measure of how much the variables move together. If it is 0.99, when one goes up the other goes up. If it is 0.02, the connection is very weak or non-existent. If it is -0.99, then when one goes up the other goes down. If it is 1.00, you probably messed up your correlation function.
r2 = 0.8516926 (Coefficient of determination)
This means 85.2% of the change in the one variable (i.e., Number of Slot Machines in Nevada) is predictable based on the change in the other (i.e., The distance between Uranus and Earth) over the 39 years from 1984 through 2022.
p < 0.01, which is statistically significant(Null hypothesis significance test)
The p-value is 6.5E-17. 0.0000000000000000652166547162
The p-value is a measure of how probable it is that we would randomly find a result this extreme. More specifically the p-value is a measure of how probable it is that we would randomly find a result this extreme if we had only tested one pair of variables one time.
But I am a p-villain. I absolutely did not test only one pair of variables one time. I correlated hundreds of millions of pairs of variables. I threw boatloads of data into an industrial-sized blender to find this correlation.
Who is going to stop me? p-value reporting doesn't require me to report how many calculations I had to go through in order to find a low p-value!
On average, you will find a correaltion as strong as 0.92 in 6.5E-15% of random cases. Said differently, if you correlated 15,333,506,515,347,178 random variables You don't actually need 15 quadrillion variables to find a correlation like this one. I don't have that many variables in my database. You can also correlate variables that are not independent. I do this a lot.
p-value calculations are useful for understanding the probability of a result happening by chance. They are most useful when used to highlight the risk of a fluke outcome. For example, if you calculate a p-value of 0.30, the risk that the result is a fluke is high. It is good to know that! But there are lots of ways to get a p-value of less than 0.01, as evidenced by this project.
In this particular case, the values are so extreme as to be meaningless. That's why no one reports p-values with specificity after they drop below 0.01.
Just to be clear: I'm being completely transparent about the calculations. There is no math trickery. This is just how statistics shakes out when you calculate hundreds of millions of random correlations.
with the same 38 degrees of freedom, Degrees of freedom is a measure of how many free components we are testing. In this case it is 38 because we have two variables measured over a period of 39 years. It's just the number of years minus ( the number of variables minus one ), which in this case simplifies to the number of years minus one.
you would randomly expect to find a correlation as strong as this one.
[ 0.86, 0.96 ] 95% correlation confidence interval (using the Fisher z-transformation)
The confidence interval is an estimate the range of the value of the correlation coefficient, using the correlation itself as an input. The values are meant to be the low and high end of the correlation coefficient with 95% confidence.
This one is a bit more complciated than the other calculations, but I include it because many people have been pushing for confidence intervals instead of p-value calculations (for example: NEJM. However, if you are dredging data, you can reliably find yourself in the 5%. That's my goal!
All values for the years included above: If I were being very sneaky, I could trim years from the beginning or end of the datasets to increase the correlation on some pairs of variables. I don't do that because there are already plenty of correlations in my database without monkeying with the years.
Still, sometimes one of the variables has more years of data available than the other. This page only shows the overlapping years. To see all the years, click on "See what else correlates with..." link above.

Why this works
- Data dredging: I have 25,153 variables in my database. I compare all these variables against each other to find ones that randomly match up. That's 632,673,409 correlation calculations! This is called “data dredging.” Instead of starting with a hypothesis and testing it, I instead abused the data to see what correlations shake out. It’s a dangerous way to go about analysis, because any sufficiently large dataset will yield strong correlations completely at random.
- Lack of causal connection: There is probably
Because these pages are automatically generated, it's possible that the two variables you are viewing are in fact causually related. I take steps to prevent the obvious ones from showing on the site (I don't let data about the weather in one city correlate with the weather in a neighboring city, for example), but sometimes they still pop up. If they are related, cool! You found a loophole.
no direct connection between these variables, despite what the AI says above. This is exacerbated by the fact that I used "Years" as the base variable. Lots of things happen in a year that are not related to each other! Most studies would use something like "one person" in stead of "one year" to be the "thing" studied. - Observations not independent: For many variables, sequential years are not independent of each other. If a population of people is continuously doing something every day, there is no reason to think they would suddenly change how they are doing that thing on January 1. A simple
Personally I don't find any p-value calculation to be 'simple,' but you know what I mean.
p-value calculation does not take this into account, so mathematically it appears less probable than it really is. - Y-axis doesn't start at zero: I truncated the Y-axes of the graph above. I also used a line graph, which makes the visual connection stand out more than it deserves.
Nothing against line graphs. They are great at telling a story when you have linear data! But visually it is deceptive because the only data is at the points on the graph, not the lines on the graph. In between each point, the data could have been doing anything. Like going for a random walk by itself!
Mathematically what I showed is true, but it is intentionally misleading. Below is the same chart but with both Y-axes starting at zero.
