You can copy my charts!
I release all the images and charts on TylerVigen.com under a Creative Commons 4.0 Attribution license. This means that you can:
- Copy and redistribute the text and images in any medium or format for any purpose, even commercially
- Edit, remix, transform, and build upon the material for any purpose, even commercially
I've been using a creative commons license for content on my blog since 2014, and I have no intention of ever changing that.
Sometimes this language feels a bit dense and intangible, so here are some examples of things you are completely allowed and encouraged to do with my charts:
- Use them in your PowerPoint presentation as humorous examplesIn fact if you do this, the line charts are designed to be easy to edit. Right click and click "Create shape" or "Ungroup" and then you can edit the text and change the colors.
- Include them in your online article about correlations
- Create a listicle of the top 10 funniest examples and paste your favorites
- Print one as an example in your book
- Take the data and edit into a new chart that matches the format of your work, and print that
- Re-host an entire website called “tylervigenschartsbutwithads.com” and re-upload all my charts but include advertisements so you make money on it
Attribution
Attribution can take many forms. You are free to use the form that makes the most sense given the context of your work. You just need to cite "Tyler Vigen" or reference my site somewhere. If you download an image as-is, it already has all the attribution it needs built-in (the part that says "tylervigen.com").
For the record, I am just one person. Tyler Vigen, he/him/his. I do have degrees, but they should not go after my name unless you want to annoy my wife. If that is your goal, then go ahead and cite me as "Tyler Vigen, A.A. A.A.S. B.A. J.D." Otherwise it is just "Tyler Vigen."
Here are some examples of attribution that I considered perfectly acceptable:
- "Courtesy of Tyler Vigen"
- "Chart by Tyler Vigen"
- "Data from Tyler Vigen"
- "tylervigen.com"
- "See Tyler Vigen, Spurious Correlations, available at https://tylervigen.com/spurious-correlations"
When spoken, my last name is pronounced "vegan," like I don't eat meat.
Written permission
If this page is insufficient for your editor, fear not! I have four options for you.
1: Downloadable PDF
Here is a downloadable signed PDF granting you permission to use the charts.
2: PDF with your name and date
Did your lawyers whine about the lack of a date on the generic PDF? No worries. Fill out this form with your name (or your organization's name) and it will generate a signed and dated permission form for you.
